Why Hostgator sucks?
February 19, 2008 on 8:37 pm | In Domains & Hosting | No CommentsThey are great for simple web sites that get very little traffic, but once you try to move a REAL web site that gets 1,000,000 page views a month… they don’t know how to advise you on your decision at all. I felt like I was talking to someone in a different language.

Please wait for a HostGator operator to respond.
Welcome to HostGator Live Chat! You are now chatting with ‘David K.’
David K.: Welcome to HostGator, how may I assist you?
Jason: I purchased the following web site today and would like to know what hosting plan you recommend I use to host it…
Jason: based on these stats of traffic…
Jason: http://www.quantcast.com/slopdog.com
David K.: You may want to start with a baby account.
David K.: If you need more bandwidth later you can upgrade to teh swamp.
Jason: With nearly 50,000 uniques and 1,000,000 page views a month?
Jason: I don’t want HostGator to tell me in a month that Slopdog is hogging the shared server and I MUST move to a dedicated server.
Jason: I need to know 100% upfront if these stats will be supported on a BABY account.
Jason: You know?
Jason: So… just making sure…
Jason: Some people tell me I will be fine on a shared server…
Jason: Others say some hosts have wimpy servers or whatever.. and will freak out…
Jason: So…
David K.: You should be able to do so just fine.
Jason: What makes you think that?
Jason: Just curious?
David K.: If you do not exceed the disk space and bandwidth you will be fine.
Jason: Or what are your statistics for CPU usage, page views, uniques, that force you to require a dedicated server?
David K.: Make sure you do nto exceed 25% cpu usage and it will be tolerated.
Jason: I would like to understand a little more clearly what the threshold is, so I can plan to scale up.
Jason: How can you be sure that 1,000,000 page views a month, with roughly 50GB transfer isn’t 50% CPU usage? Do you have metrics that say, 1,000,000 page views (or whatever stat) on our avg server will take 10% cpu or something?
Jason: Also, do I have a way to monitor CPU through cpanel or something?
Jason: HELLO?
David K.: There is not.
David K.: You are limited to 25% cpu.
David K.: You will be limited to 25% CPU for up to 90 seconds at a time, 500 emails per hour, 50,000 inodes, and 25 simultaneous mySQL processes.
Jason: Hmmmm…
Jason: How do you suggest I confirm more accurately if this very active site will satisfy your BABY plan, or a shared plan? If I get current CPU usage stats?
Jason: It’s a very time consuming process to move the site to your servers, and I do not wish to do this, unless I know what I’m getting into… that’s all.
David K.: If you are using 50% cpu usage you will need a dedicated.
Jason: does that not depend on the power of the server, however? for instance, if it is at 20% cpu usage on a server that is 3 times more powerful than the hostgator server, then once i move it, it will be 60% cpu usage on your server… no?
David K.: That is correct.
Jason: ok
Jason: so do you have a white paper, or a more accurate way to figure this out?
Jason: at this time i dont feel confident moving over to you guys, and i really would like to earn that confidence…
Jason: or perhaps i could chat with a network engineer for a moment?
There may be a problem communicating with David K.. Please wait while your chat is transferred to another operator.
Welcome to HostGator Live Chat! You are now chatting with ‘Alex S’
Alex S: Welcome to HostGator, how may I assist you?
Jason: Hi.
Jason: Did David K bring you up to speed, or should I explain from the top?
Alex S: One moment please.
Jason: ok
Alex S: I’m afraid that the kind of traffic you expect would not be appropriate for a shared plan
Jason: This is what I need to understand.
Jason: What makes you come to this conclusion, what is the threshold?
Alex S: Most sites are php based and deliver dynamic content. That puts more load on the server. With that kind of load, a shared plan would not be appropriate
Jason: Can you quantify what the threshold is in statistics between a Hostgator shared server and a dedicated server?
Jason: in page views, uniques, bandwidth, cpu usage?
Jason: etc…
Alex S: It depends on what kind of dedicated server you have. But I cannot get that information because I don’t know anything about what your site consumes in reality
Jason: and what the ceiling is for a dedicated server? if i move slopdog to a dedicated hostgator server at $179/month… at what point will i outlive this solution?
Jason: then how can you come to the conclusion that i need a dedicated server???
Jason: I gave David K very accurate numbers. Did he not share them?
Jason: http://www.quantcast.com/slopdog.com
Jason: HELLLO??
Alex S: Please wait while I check.
Alex S: Are you having trouble with your current host?
Alex S: This chat will now be terminated due to inactivity.
Alex S: Thank you for using HostGator Live Chat. Â Your opinion is very important to us. Â When closing the chat, please take a minute to fill out the brief survey that pops up so that we may continue to improve our customer service and support.
Chat session has been terminated by the site operator.

April 7, 2006 on 11:57 am | In Domains & Hosting | 3 Comments
One way to find cutting edge internet business ideas, is to monitor brand new sites, and see what is being launched around the world on a daily basis! I did a search on Google for all sites referencing one of my domains, and found out my host, HostGator, had me on a list of new domains, along with 90-something others.
If someone isn’t on this, it is an interesting idea. In fact, that young entrepreneur at http://www.sitespin.net/ could add a FRESH SPIN which sent you to sites launched this week.
In any event, there is some value in checking out what is fresh. no matter how raw it is.

Advantages to purchasing subdomains?
April 3, 2006 on 10:33 pm | In Domains & Hosting | No Comments
If so, then it would be better to purchase a subdomain for sale. Another potential advantage to buying a subdomain would be to be a part of a great keyword domain. I googled “subdomain for sale” and didn’t find much, so I’m not sure about this. Darren Rowse bought a subdomain early on, which posed the question. I think he was just broke at the time, who knows?! Still question remains, which I need to research… unless anyone comments on this:
Are there REAL useful advantages to purchasing subdomains, in place of an outright domain?
It seems more risky to me, as you are dependant on the decisions of the primary domain owner, but certainly there must be a case for purchasing a subdomain over an actual domain? WHY DO I CARE SO MUCH!? I must be bored.
HAHA… goodnight!
PS: Old link, but some details here.
PPS: A subtopic to this is can the subdomain use blackhat SEO techniques (unethical means to get high ranking on Google) and subsequently get the main domain penalized/removed? The following answer weighed heavy:
One of my SEO clients has had a subdomain penalised (before I worked with them), and it is nowhere to be found in the Google SERPs despite thousands of backlinks. Their main domain is, however, unaffected and enjoys good rankings in some competitive areas. A penalty of any sort would have caused serious damage to those rankings yet when the subdomain was shot down there was virtually no change to the primary domain (in fact, less of a change than I would have expected as a result of the loss of links from the subdomain).
And another guy posted…
i’ve had cases of subdomains being banned where the top level domain gets banned also.. (of course they were crosslinked, so that might have been the case)
So the verdict is still out in this gray area of blackhat vs. whitehat.
Interview with HostGator
March 7, 2006 on 8:06 pm | In Domains & Hosting | No Comments
I spent over 5 years and 10 domains with Doteasy and was quite happy with their incredibly cost effective, and quite reliable service. However, about 4 months ago HostGator won me over, and as of right now, I’m definitley not going to renew my Doteasy account. WHY? HostGator is cheap, and has a great plan with unlimited domains, which Doteasy doesn’t. HostGator also has LIVE CHAT on their home page which has come in handy at least 12 times when I’ve needed immediate support.
What follows is my interview with HostGator:
Q: How long has HostGator been in business?
A: Since 2001Q: Does the web host own its data center?
A: No, we lease from www.theplanet.comQ: How many upstream internet providers do you have?
A: They have plenty of providers providing them with internet access, you can view there website at www.theplanet.comQ: Do you regularly backup web sites in case of data loss? If so, how often, and what is the cost, if any, for restoration of lost data?
A: We back up our data once a week and if you need resotration of lsot data it is 15$Q: What levels of redundancy does the web host’s architecture provide?
A: Once again all our Servers, and therefore archtecture resides at the planet a massive data center. So we never have any problems on that level, and rarely any problems with the servers themselves.Q: Do you allow hosting adult content?
A: Yes we allow any content as long as its not illelagalQ: With the “Baby” hosting package, where I am sharing a hosting account with others on the same server, can I request to not be on a server with anyone that is hosting adult content? The reason is, because google will block the IP address, and my content will not get indexed by Google, if it is on the same server as a web site with adult content.
A: No unfortunatly we don’t offer that. The server you are assigned is automatic and is determiend by what kind of plan you have, due to space usageQ: Do you know if the HostGator network has Blackholed IPs?
A: We have in the past but as soon as that occurs we have them immediatly un black listed and suspend/ban the accounts that caused it. For obvious reasons we take that very seriouslyQ: Do you have any idea if theplanet has redundant power to the servers, and a generator onsite, in case there is a power outage in Texas?
A: Yes they have a generator on site in case of power outages, I know this for a fact.Q: Do you have metrics on the up/down speed I can expect from the server I get with a “Baby” account??
A: Honestly, no. But its generally only limited by the users bandwidth not the bandwidth of our serversQ: do you happen to have any idea what the average utilization of the connections is? (No matter how large the connection, if it is running at maximum capacity, it will be slow).
A: No, I’m not aware of the average utlization of the connection, and wouldn’t be able to answer that questionQ: Is HostGator profitable and cash flow positive from operation-generated revenue?
A: As far as I’m aware, yes.

Another option I hear a lot of people talking about for CHEAP hosting.
